Cameron Norrie, the tournament rookie and fan favourite from the home audience, was defeated by Taylor Fritz to give Team World its lone victory on Day 2. The American appeared unsure at times as he lost his bearings after a strong start to the match and later blew an 8-4 lead in the match tiebreaker. Fortunately for him and his team, all those missed opportunities did not damage him in the end. In team contests in the ATP Cup and Davis Cup this year, four of his six matches and all three of his matches in the Laver Cup went the full two hours. When he first competed in this tournament in 2019, he participated in two singles matches, losing one to Stefanos Tsitsipas and winning the other.
At the Laver Cup a few days ago, Casper Ruud began Team Europe’s title-defense effort by overcoming Jack Sock in a gruelling three-set match. He dropped a serve once in the opening set, went on to lose the second set, and fell behind 0-3 in the tiebreaker for the match. His previous two singles matches in the Laver Cup versus Americans, Reilly Opelka in 2021 and Jack Sock in 2022, both resulted in victories, and this time he will compete against another American for three points. Between the ATP Cup 2020 and Geneva 2022, he won 13 straight wins against American opponents. This streak came to a stop against Ben Shelton at the Cincinnati Masters last month.
