Cameron Norrie has had a successful season, one that included him reaching a Grand Slam semifinal; Wimbledon was his best major performance. And given his past results, Norrie might have been a little let down by his fourth round US Open exit after losing to Andrey Rublev in straight sets. Following that, he participated in all of Britain’s Davis Cup matches, playing in just one victory and two defeats. The lone win came against Fritz, where the British player overcame a first-set deficit to earn a valiant 2-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5 victory.
The American hasn’t had the kind of results he would have liked since reaching the Wimbledon quarterfinals, where Taylor Fritz all but sent Rafael Nadal packing. Sure, he reached the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters before losing to Daniil Medvedev, but a second-round exit in Washington and a third-round defeat in Montreal hardly do justice to his talent. The worst came at the US Open, when Fritz was a 1/25 favorite to beat Brandon Holt, only to lose in a four-setter after winning the first set. He also played in the United States’ Davis Cup campaign last weekend, losing two of three matches, including one against Norrie.
