Fans and players across the world will have their eyes glued to their screens when Federer makes his final appearance on the courts.
The 2022 edition of the Laver Cup may be the most significant so far as it serves to be the final competition the great Roger Federer will compete in. Earlier this year, Federer had announced that he would not be a part of the Wimbledon Championships due to injury and would make his return at the Laver Cup. However, few predicted at the time that it would be his last dance. When news broke, the tennis world was sent into a frenzy. Fans and players across the world flooded social media with tribute posts for Federer and everyone will have their eyes glued to their screens when the great man makes his final appearance on the courts.
Apart from the Swiss, this year truly has a blockbuster line-up in its own right. The likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and several others will be a part of the action. The Laver Cup is not a competition that works like any other ATP or WTA tournament. There are two teams, Team Europe and Team World, the players of which have to keep in mind a vast set of rules and regulations in order to win any match. Each team consists of a captain and vice-captain who are responsible for coaching the players to success.
Unlike other competitive tennis tournaments that are usually played over the course of a week, the Laver Cup is done and dusted within three days. There are two teams consisting of six players, and a captain and vice-captain each. A total of five sessions will be played over the course of the three days with both the singles and doubles matches played in a best of three sets format. If the score after two sets stands to be 1-1, the third set is played as a 10-point tie-breaker.
The team that reaches 13 points first is declared the champions of the Laver Cup. The points system is a unique one that are dependent on the days of the matches. Friday matches are worth one point, Saturday matches are worth two and Sunday matches are worth three. The three days will see a total of five sessions and no player is allowed to play more than two singles matches in the competition.
A total of 12 matches are played in total and in case of a tie after all the matches have concluded, a final overtime doubles match is played as a regular set with ad scoring and a tiebreak as the decider. If there is only one match left to be played on the final day of the competition, a friendly exhibition match will follow the trophy ceremony.
The 2022 Laver Cup is scheduled to commence on Friday, September 23 and conclude on Sunday, September 25.
