28 in the world by winning his first ATP 250 championship and making his first major quarterfinal at Roland Garros, Holger Rune reached new heights. However, Rune has struggled to win even one match since losing to Casper Ruud at the French Open, and he enters the contest in Washington with a seven-match losing run. The initial games that Rune played in Halle, Eastbourne, Wimbledon, Bastad, Hamburg, and Umag were lost. As he prepares for his Washington debut, the 19-year-old will be hoping against hope for a turn of luck. He has a 9-10 overall record and a 2-4 season record on hard courts, where he has yet to make an impact on the tour. With a record of 16–17 for the year, Rune has won his first ATP title at the Munich Open after Botic van de Zandschulp quit from the match. In addition to reaching the semifinals in Lyon, Rune advanced to the last eight of the Paris major by defeating Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

World No. 112 Benoit Paire, who defeated Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets on Monday to earn his fourth victory of the year, will compete against Rune. Paire won the 68-minute match 7-5, 6-4 after falling behind 0-2 in the first set. Paire then mounted a tremendous comeback and never looked in jeopardy. The Frenchman improved his season record to 4-19 in Washington, where he twice reached the quarterfinals. The former top 20 player, a three-time champion on the tour, has struggled mightily this year and halted a seven-match losing streak in the opening round. That losing streak included a Challenger-level defeat. The Australian Open was where Paire played his finest tennis of the year, winning the opening two rounds before losing to Tsitsipas.
