On Tuesday, Holger Rune, the 28th seed from Denmark, will compete in the first round of the 2022 US Open against veteran German player Peter Gojowczyk.
There is no question that Holger Rune hit his lofty ceiling at the French Open this year. Hugo Gaston, Denis Shapovalov, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, the runner-up from the previous year, were among those who were stunned by the young Dane right away. At the time, it was the stuff of dreams; the kind of outcome you might anticipate would launch a career that had encountered its share of bumps in the road. However, since falling to Casper Ruud in his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal, Rune has had a terrible run of fortunes. In nine competitions, he has only managed to win twice while losing six times in the first round. At the Cincinnati Masters last week, where he narrowly lost to British No. 1 Cameron Norrie in three sets, he seemed to be back to his pre-French Open form.
At 33, Peter Gojowczyk is obviously long past his prime, but you still can’t rule him out, especially after his remarkable run at the US Open last year to the fourth round. He qualified for the event last year, benefited from a very kind draw (not that players like Humbert and Lajovic are easy opponents), and was only defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the Round of 16 in five sets. However, he has spent the majority of this year preparing for ATP Tour events. As a result, he has played only 15 main draw matches this year and has lost a staggering 12. He only has three victories this season, but last week’s victory over Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic gave him a confidence-boosting victory.
Holger Rune and Peter Gojowczyk are scheduled to face each other on Tuesday, August 30 in the first round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
