In the third round of the 2022 US Open on Saturday, world number 11 Andrey Rublev will face Denis Shapovalov, who is ranked 21st.
One could have anticipated that Andrey Rublev would falter a little bit against Soon-woo Kwon after the kind of beating he took from Laslo Djere in the first round. There were thankfully no replays of such antics for the Russia, who hasn’t been in the best of form lately, as he breezed through Kwon in straight sets to go to the third round. Rublev defeated Kwon 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 in a match that lasted an hour and 45 minutes on the court. He had six break points and converted every single one of them. Rublev dropped his serve just after breaking Kwon in the fifth game of the third set, which was the only time he even remotely appeared to be in trouble. A few games later, he broke Kwon once more and served it out to 15 to secure his place in the third round.
The 80th-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena dislikes hard court surfaces, therefore Denis Shapovalov would have preferred a more ruthless performance than what he gave in his victory over the Spanish opponent in the second round. Shapovalov defeated Carballes Baena in over three hours, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the third round. The 2020 quarterfinalist overcame a break of service in the seventh game of the first set despite being down an early break before breaking his opponent twice to win it. He will want to serve first far more frequently than he did in the second round against Rublev.
Andrey Rublev and Denis Shapovalov are scheduled to face each other on Saturday, September 3 in the round of 16 of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
