On Tuesday, Andrey Rublev, ranked eleventh in the world, will compete in the first round of the 2022 US Open with Serbia's Laslo Djere.
Rublev returned to competition with a couple of clay tournaments in July after nearly missing the full grass court swing, but his focus would have been on the US Open’s main prize this year. But despite his best efforts, the US Open Series hasn’t exactly gone as well for him as he had hoped. Andrey Rublev entered the Washington Open semifinals after three straight-set victories, but Yoshihito Nishioka shocked him there. After receiving a bye at the Canadian Open, Rublev struggled to win a round in the Cincinnati Masters before falling to Dan Evans in the second round. There, Rublev won a hard-fought three-set match against Fabio Fognini before falling to Taylor Fritz in the third round.
Djere is renowned for his clay court skills because he has won two championships there throughout his career. Laslo Djere‘s career accomplishments on hard courts, though, are limited to what transpired last week in Winston-Salem. Djere defeated five opponents in a row to go to the tournament’s final in what ended up being his best hard court campaign of his career. While playing against Rublev will be significantly different from the types of opponents he faced in Winston-Salem, he will also be aware that the Russian hasn’t been playing well, which may provide him some opportunity for disruption.
Andrey Rublev and Laslo Djere are scheduled to face each other on Tuesday, August 30 in the first round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
