Alison Riske had a poor start to the season, losing five of her six games and nine of her previous ten. She advanced to the third round in Toronto, Cincinnati, and the US Open all within the previous six months. Her lone victory since those outcomes, however, came in Adelaide qualifying against wildcard and world No. 489 Alana Parnaby. The American has a three-year history of being prone to bad form. Since the beginning of 2021, she has experienced 21 opening-round eliminations. She is appreciative that she was able to stay in the top 30 until recently thanks to her final appearances in Adelaide and Nottingham the previous year, as well as two finals in late 2021.
Before this season, Katie Volynets had a 3-15 record in WTA main draw matches. In the past two months alone, she has doubled her career win total, particularly after beating world no. 9 Veronika Kudermetova in three sets and Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets to advance to the third round of the Australian Open, her first grand slam tournament. As she rose from the 180s at the beginning of 2022 to the top 100, the victory over the top-ranked Russian became her first top 50 victory. She travelled to Mexico last week to compete in the inaugural Merida tournament, where she came back to beat Lucia Bronzetti before falling to fellow American Caty McNally in straight sets in the second round.

She defeated her fellow countrymen five out of ten times last year, but she fell short in the most recent contests in San Diego and Tokyo to Claire Liu and Louisa Chirico. The eighth victory in the top 100 would be sought after by Katie Volynets.
