On Monday, Rafael Nadal will play Frances Tiafoe, the No. 22 seed, in the fourth round of the 2022 US Open.
On Saturday, Rafael Nadal crushed longtime rival Richard Gasquet in straight sets to go to the Australian Open fourth round. In the third set, the 22-time Grand Slam victor took a 2-0 lead before Gasquet eventually experienced a brief run of success by winning three games in a row. Both players maintained their serves for a while before Nadal pulled away to win the match 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 and increase his record over Gasquet to 18-0. In the two hours and 17 minutes of play, Nadal hit 35 winners, converted 7 of his 15 break points, and committed 23 unforced errors. Following his come-from-behind victories over Rinky Hijikata and Fabio Fognini in the opening two rounds, the Spaniard put on a polished display. Nadal defeated the first 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, and the second 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. After winning the Australian and French Opens, Rafael Nadal is going for his third major championship of the year. He also came close at Wimbledon, but an injury forced him to withdraw prior to his semifinal match.
22nd seed For the third consecutive year, Frances Tiafoe advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open after defeating 14th seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. Before taking the first set to a tiebreak, Tiafoe saved five set points. In the second set, both players traded two breaks before Tiafoe pushed out the competition with a third break to gain a two sets to love advantage. In the midst of the third set, both players traded breaks before the American took control with a second break and won the match 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 6-4. This week, Tiafoe hasn’t lost a set. In the first round, he defeated Marcos Giron 7-6 (7-0), 6-4, 6-3. In the second round, he defeated Jason Kubler of Australia 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 7-6. (7-2).
Rafael Nadal and Frances Tiafoe are scheduled to face each other on Monday, September 5 in the fourth round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
