On Sunday, the third round of the 2022 US Open will feature Ilya Ivashka of Belarus versus Lorenzo Musetti of Italy.
Lorenzo Musetti came back from a set down to defeat the Netherlands’ Gijs Brouwer in four sets and go to the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career after surviving a thrilling five-set match against David Goffin in the first round. The 20-year-old required two and a half hours to defeat the Dutchman after reaching the fourth round of the French Open the previous year. The final set was entirely Lorenzo Musetti. In order to win the match 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, he broke his opponent twice. Musetti demonstrated his ability to maintain composure in the first round’s nail-biting finish. The Italian defeated the Belgian in five sets, four hours, and 36 minutes, scoring 173 points to Goffin’s 187, but he prevailed in crucial moments.
He overcame a set behind to defeat Sam Querrey in four sets in the first round. Two days later, Ilya Ivashka defeated Hubert Hurkacz, the eighth seed, in four sets to win another match. This result represented a significant upset. The World No. 73 took the first set’s lone break to take the lead, but Hurkacz tied the score with a lone break in the second. The third set was close, but Ivashka prevailed in a tiebreak. The Belarusian won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in three hours and five minutes after breaking first and holding the lead the entire fourth set. Ivashka defeated Querrey 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 in the opening round.
Ilya Ivashka and Lorenzo Musetti are scheduled to face each other on Sunday, September 4 in the round of 16 of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
