Pablo Carreno Busta vs Karen Khachanov are scheduled to face each other on Sunday, September 4 in the round of 16 of the 2022 US Open.
Carreno Busta’s form came into this tournament after winning the Montreal Masters and then losing in the first round in Cincinnati. And here at the US Open, he’s already faced three tough opponents in their own right and come through in fine, fighting form. Pablo Carreno Busta, who needed four sets to beat Dominic Thiem and Alexander Bublik, dropped another set to beat Alex de Minaur in the third round. Carreno Busta had a match-point off de Minaur’s serve in the fourth but lost in the tie-breaker that followed. Carreno Busta only lost one serve in the match, winning 75% of his first serve points.
Karen Khachanov was the second favorite, with 6/5 odds to beat Jack Draper in the third round. The match was also nicely poised, with both players sneaking a set and Draper leading 2-0 in the third before a muscle in his hamstring gave way, effectively ending the match for the Brit. That would have been music to the ears of world number 31 Khachanov, who limped through most of the third set and was facing a serve to take the set despite being up 4-2 at one point. What Khachanov will realize is that he must perform far better than he did against Draper.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Karen Khachanov are scheduled to face each other on Sunday, September 4 in the round of 16 of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
