On Wednesday, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy will play former World No. 7 David Goffin in the opening round of the 2022 US Open.
For the first six months of the 2022 season, Lorenzo Musetti has wowed audiences with his tennis. And so it was no surprise when he eventually overcame his inconsistent demons by claiming his maiden ATP championship. Before he trudged off on the following aircraft to the US a few weeks ago, he outlasted fellow Next Gen star Carlos Alcaraz in a tense and hard-fought final in Hamburg. Since the beginning of the year, Musetti has regained his form as a player. However, after winning 29 games at all levels this season, he has yet to triumph at any of the season’s first three Majors. He will undoubtedly feel pressure to perform well at the US Open in order to win the first Grand Slam in 2022. In addition, he will be seeded for the first time, which virtually guarantees that he will be a huge favourite to advance to the second round.
Similar to Musetti, David Goffin has manipulated his performance this season. It can sometimes pay off greatly to start the season fresh, as was the case for former World No. 7 Goffin. The Belgian’s 2021 and 2022, where he won four of his 13 matches in the first quarter, were both not outstanding. But at the start of the clay-court season, he was able to put everything back together. In Marrakech, he won his sixth championship of his career. He later qualified for the Round of 16 in Madrid. His ranking had significantly fallen before April, but those results drove him back into the top 50. For the second time at a grass-court slam, Goffin advanced to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, where he heroically fell to Cameron Norrie in five sets.
Lorenzo Musetti and David Goffin are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, August 31 in the first round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
