In the opening round of the 2022 ATP Winston Salem Open on Monday, Australia's John Millman, ranked 101st in the world, will compete against France's Hugo Gaston, ranked 68th in the world.

For the first time in five years, John Millman has slid out of the top 100 after a dismal start to the season. In February, he did reach the semifinals in Delray Beach, but he hasn’t advanced past the second round of any major ATP event since. Additionally, it means that he is now required to compete in qualifying events for important events like Cincinnati last week, where he ran poorly and was defeated at the first hurdle by the Italian Lorenzo Sonego. He is protected from it this week thanks to Winston Salem’s weaker field. After igniting a social media firestorm by supporting Novak Djokovic‘s eligibility to compete at the US Open next week, the Australian may be relieved to return to tennis for a while.
There hasn’t been much in Hugo Gaston’s recent form to suggest he can repeat his run to the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters last November, so it’s starting to appear like an anomaly. Though he did make it to the third round of the French Open and the final eight in Rosmalen, the Frenchman’s transition to the American hard courts hasn’t gone as planned thus far. Gaston had the good fortune to have both of his opponents withdraw from the qualifying tournament in Montreal due to injury, but he was soundly defeated by Jack Draper of Great Britain in the opening round. Cincinnati was to see things get worse. He was beaten and only managed to win one game against David Goffin of Belgium in the opening round of qualification there.
John Millman and Hugo Gaston are scheduled to face one another in the opening round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Monday, August 22. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
The 2022 Winston-Salem Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for men’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 21 and conclude on August 27 this year.
