Stefanos Tsitsipas, ranked seventh in the world, will compete against Borna Coric, ranked 152nd, in the 2022 ATP Cincinnati Open championship match on Sunday.

Tsitsipas defeated Daniil Medvedev in three sets over the course of two hours and 25 minutes to advance to his fifth ATP final of the year. He’ll be going for his third championship of the year and first one on hard courts. Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Medvedev with a score of 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-3 after also being pushed to the limit by John Isner in the quarterfinals. Both players broke three serves during the match, but Tsitsipas’ ruthless play in the decisive set proved to be the difference between them. Tsitsipas earned himself the sole break-point of the final set in the sixth game and converted it after saving a set-point in the opening set. He then advanced into the final with just four points lost on his own serve.

Coric has participated in five matches in this competition, and each time he took the court, he was the second-favorite player going into that match. It began with a victory over Lorenzo Musetti in the first round, but it was more crucial when he faced Rafael Nadal as a 4/1 underdog in the second set. The Spaniard was defeated by Borna Coric in three sets. From that point on, Coric has had little trouble defeating Roberto Bautista Agut, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Cameron Norrie to get to the championship game. Particularly when playing Norrie, Coric spent an hour and a half on court and only encountered two break points. Coric is participating in his first ATP final since October 2020, and he will face a challenge in defeating an improved Tsitsipas.
