With a victory in straight sets on Friday, world No. 7 Aryna Sabalenka put a stop to Zhang Shuai’s impressive run in the competition and advanced the Belarussian into her first hard court semifinal since the U.S. Open. Sabalenka saved two break points at 5-5, battled back from a break down four times, and then dominated the tiebreak to win the match 6-4, 7-6 in an hour and 49 minutes (7-1). Anett Kontaveit, the second seed, and Naomi Osaka were both defeated by Zhang en route to the quarterfinals, but she lost her way in the last eight. Sabalenka’s season record now stands at 24-16 thanks to the victory. She’ll be participating in a semifinal for the fourth time this year. In Stuttgart and’s-Hertogenbosch, she came in second place, and in Rome, she lost in the semifinals.

After Akgul Amanmuradova , in-form Caroline Garcia overcame Jessica Pegula on Friday to get to the semifinals in Cincinnati. She continued on to win the Poland Open, bringing her total of WTA victories from 12 finals to nine. The match was flawless for the World No. 35. She saved both of the break points she faced and won 80% of her first serve points, leading to a resounding 6-1, 7-5 triumph. Garcia beat Andrea Petkovic and Diane Parry in gruelling three-set matches to advance to the main draw. In this week’s main draws, she has only been broken three times. After starting her career with a straight sets victory over Petra Martic, she took three sets to defeat Maria Sakkari, the fourth seed and World No. 3, before claiming a second straight sets victory over Elise Mertens of Belgium in the Round of 16.
