On Friday, Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, will play Wu Yibing, a Chinese qualifier, in the third round of the 2022 US Open.
World No. 1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev easily defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech on Wednesday to advance to the third round of the U.S. Open. Open. The 26-year-old avoided all three break points he was presented with during the match, thus he wasn’t broken. He himself only had one chance to break Rinderknech’s serve, but he took advantage of all five of those opportunities to win 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. The 2022 Australian Open semifinalist, who recently won his first championship of the year in Los Cabos, entered the competition as a semifinalist from Cincinnati. He enjoyed a simple victory over Stefan Kozlov on Monday to start his title defence. In order to defeat Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 6-0, the Russian converted 8 of 16 break points and stopped 3 of 5. With the two victories, Medvedev has improved to 36-12 in 2022 and 20-4 at the U.S. Open, where he defeated Novak Djokovic to win the championship the previous year.
The first Chinese participant Wu Yibing in the Open era, got off to a dream start on Monday with a victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili, the 31st seed. He beat fellow qualifier Nuno Borges in five on Wednesday, continuing his unbeaten streak. Wu defeated the Portuguese 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. She was joined in the main draw by fellow countryman Zhang Zhizhen. The match’s three hours and 46 minutes saw a change in the direction of the momentum. Wu committed 81 unforced errors in the match compared to the Portuguese’s 55 while Borges hit 59 winners to Wu’s 32. Wu, who is ranked 178th, won’t have a chance against the World No. 1 on Friday. He may, however, have an influence by putting on a strong performance and challenging Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev and Wu Yibing are scheduled to face each other on Friday, September 2 in the third round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
