Berrettini also became the Italian male player with the most wins at the US Open, with 13 wins.
Italian tennis start Matteo Berrettini made the perfect start to his 2022 US Open campaign when he won his opening match with absolute dominance. The Italian faced Nicolas Jarry on Monday and won 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 in what was a comfortable day at the office. Berrettini hit 10 aces in the match and recorded five out of 10 break points. The 13th seed recorded win percentages of 85% and 59% on the first and second serves respectively. He also became the Italian male player with the most wins at the US Open, with 13 wins. The record was previously held by Andreas Seppi who had 12 wins at the Flushing Meadows. Berrettini will face Frenchman Hugo Grenier in the second round of the Grand Slam.
Unlike Berrettni, Grenier had to play three qualifying matches to make it through to the main draw of the 2022 US Open. The Frenchman displayed a fine performance in the first round as he beat Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The score at the end of the match was 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 with Grenier scoring nine aces and and recording four out of six break points.
Matteo Berrettini and Hugo Grenier are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, August 31 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
