On Saturday in Argentina, Francisco Cerundolo will compete against Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ATP Buenos Aires Open.
Diego Schwartzman, the fourth seed, was defeated by Bernabe Zapata Miralles to advance to his second quarterfinal on the tour. The world no. 74 caused problems for the 2021 champion and finalist Schwartzman straight from the start of the second round match on Thursday. The Spaniard won the match 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 18 minutes, allowing the Argentine to win only one of his eight service games. Zapata Miralles saved none of the three break points he faced, while converting half of the 14 break points he had in the match. It turned out that beating the world No. 32 was much simpler than beating fellow Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the first round, which took two and a half hours. That match had been won by Zapata Miralles, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. The Spanish player had a difficult start to the season, dropping all three of his matches on hard courts, but his fortunes have changed since switching to clay, which is his favoured surface. Before losing in the second round, he won the opening match in Cordoba. He followed up that effort in Buenos Aires with two victories. Could he advance to the semifinals?
Francesco Cerundolo, a 2021 Buenos Aires finalist, destroyed Jaume Munar in straight sets on Thursday in the second round of the ATP 250 tournament to move to his third consecutive quarterfinal. Diego Schwartzman denied him the championship in 2021, although the same opponent stopped him in the round of eight the previous year. This year, Cerundolo will not compete against Schwartzman because his quarterfinal opponent defeated the fourth seed in the round of 16. Cerundolo, who is ranked no. 30 in the world, struggled to go past German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann in the opening round of this year’s Buenos Aires tournament. In the second round encounter, the 24-year-old had little issue, though, as he eliminated Munar 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 13 minutes. To advance to the quarterfinals, Cerundolo saved 2 of 2 break points and took advantage of 5 of 12 breaking opportunities. With the victory, he moved to 6-4 on the year. He had advanced to the third round of the Australian Open, and in the previous week, he had won the Cordoba quarterfinals.
