Grigor Dimitrov and Sebastian Korda will face each other in the second round of the 2022 Citi open on Friday, August 5.
After receiving a first-round bye in this competition following his first-round loss at Wimbledon, Dimitrov came through in a hard-fought match against Adrian Mannarino. Dimitrov was on court for two hours and four minutes before defeating Mannarino 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. The Bulgarian appeared to be on his way to victory when he broke his French opponent twice in two games, winning the first set in just over 30 minutes. Mannarino proved to be a tougher nut to crack in the second set, and Dimitrov’s frustration showed when he lost his serve off the only break-point of the set.
A 16-14 win-loss record for the season may not have gone down well with Sebastian Korda, who is widely regarded as the next top-10 player. That’s why back-to-back wins in Washington, both in straight sets, would have given him some relief. Korda won in straight sets against Sebastian Baez in the second round after defeating Ilya Ivashka in a match that bookmakers predicted could go either way. He won 6-1, 6-4 in 70 minutes, with three serve breaks out of five chances. Korda, for his part, had two break-points against him but saved both of them to set up this meeting with Dimitrov.
