Wednesday's second round of the 2022 US Open will feature Cristian Garin of Chile and No. 18 seed Alex de Minaur of Australia.
For the first round of the U.S. Open on Monday, world No. 20 Alex de Minaur eliminated Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic in exactly two hours. The Australian got off to a rough start, needing to recover three times in the first set after falling behind by a break. However, he secured the first set with a fourth break in the last game. In the second set, the 23-year-old was much more at ease as he twice broke the Serb to take the lead two sets to love. The third set was broken by Krajinovic to get things going, but De Minaur quickly grabbed control and broke his opponent twice more to win the match 7-5, 6-2, 6-3. De Minaur, who reached the quarterfinals in 2020, was eliminated in the first round the previous year. He will be relieved to have moved to 10-5 at the U.S. Open and to have begun the year with a victory.
On Monday, Cristian Garin dropped the first set but came back to win the next three, eliminating Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic. Lehecka built a 2-5 lead in the second set, and the Chilean was about to trail 0-2; however, the World No. 82 fought back by winning the second set in a tiebreak, and then he firmly established himself over the final two sets to win the match in three hours and seven minutes, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, 6-1. Garin is competing in his fourth U.S. Open and has advanced to the second round for four straight years. His current goal is to make it to Flushing Meadows’ third round for the first time. The 26-year-ranking old’s has significantly dropped as a result of his erratic play this season.
Alex de Minaur and Cristian Garin are scheduled to face each other on Wednesday, August 31 in the second round of the 2022 US Open. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season began on August 29 and will go on until September 11.
