Matteo Berrettini will take on Felix Auger-Aliassime on Saturday, September 24 in the third singles match of the 2022 Laver Cup.
Withdrawing from Wimbledon due to Covid19, Matteo Berrettini chose to compete in a clay court tournament in Gstaad, where he advanced to the final. But after that, consecutive defeats in the first round of the two Masters competitions in Montreal and Cincinnati would not have surprised him. After recovering to advance to the US Open quarterfinals by defeating Andy Murray and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Berrettini went on to win three Davis Cup matches over the previous weekend. The fact that he previously performed well in this competition when he enters this match with a higher-ranked opponent could make for an interesting match.
Felix Auger-Aliassime had started the season strongly, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, winning the title in Rotterdam, and securing a spot in the title-decider in Marseille. Since then, however, the Canadian has lost his way a little, and in the 17 tournaments he has competed in at the highest level since, he has only won three consecutive matches once, at the French Open. More recently, strong starts in Montreal and Cincinnati have been followed by defeats in the third match he’s played, but victories over Jannik Sinner and Cameron Norrie in those tournaments would keep his spirits high.
