AC Milan defeated Empoli 1-0 on Saturday to extend their lead at the top of the Serie A standings. Alessandro Florenzi had a good game at the left-back position in the absence of Theo Hernandez and the Italian feels that “there are many finals coming up, and this was the first”. Pierre Kalulu’s 19th-minute strike was enough for Stefano Pioli’s side to take all three points. The Frenchman was the 16th different player to find the back of the net for the Rossoneri.

“It’s an important evening. There are many finals coming up, this was the first, the next will be against Cagliari,” Florenzi told Sky Sport Italia.

“If we continue with this determination and team spirit, we can do well, but it won’t be easy because Cagliari play good football.

“Now we rest a few days and prepare for the next battle.”

It was a good performance from Pioli’s side as they created a decent number of goal-scoring opportunities and controlled the proceedings throughout the 90 minutes. Milan took the lead when Olivier Giroud’s free-kick hit the wall but fell to Kalulu to fire into the far bottom corner with the inside of his left boot from outside the box.The result helped Milan to 63 points from 29 games, five points above second-placed Inter Milan who have two games in hand.

The left-back added “We must focus only on our own path, keep notching up points and putting pressure on the others.”

Considering Florenzi is only on loan from Roma, does he expect to remain at Milan for next season?

“I am not thinking about that. I just want to put myself at the disposal of the coach and then we’ll see what happens.”

In the other match of the day, Juventus beat Sampdoria 3-1 to move to 56 points from 29 games, just seven behind leaders Milan. Massimiliano Allegri’s side took the lead mid-way through the first half courtesy of Maya Yoshida’s own goal before Morata doubled the lead after the half-hour mark.

Although Sampdoria pulled on back through Abelhamid Samiri, Morata’s second of the night sealed Juve’s third consecutive league victory. The top four teams are separated by just seven points and with 27 points up for grabs, anything can happen in the final lap of the race for the Scudetto.
