Cristiano Ronaldo scored a spectacular hat-trick as Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday. Ronaldo put the Red Devils ahead on three separate occasions in scoring his first hat-trick since returning to the club. Meanwhile Tottenham did well for much of the game, twice equalising thanks to Harry Kane and, in the second half, through Harry Maguire’s own goal, but Ronaldo netted a late winner to seal the win for Ralf Rangnick’s side. The win helped the Red Devils to fourth spot in the standings with 50 points from 29 games, two points ahead of Arsenal who have four games in hand.

Manchester United started the match on the driving seat as Ronaldo’s shot struck Eric Dier’s arm, inside the box but but the referee didn’t award a penalty. But the home side took the lead inside the opening 12 minutes when Ronaldo’s clean strike from outside the box went past Hugo Lloris and into the back of the net.

Few moments later, at the other end, Dier’s header from a corner kick was cleared off the line by Diogo Dalot.  Spurs were playing some good football and deservedly equalised on 35 minutes. Dejan Kulusevski got past two defenders on the right flank before his attempted cross struck Alex Telles’ arm inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Kane stepped and converted the spot kick.

But Spurs’ celebrations were short lived as Ronaldo restored United’s lead three minutes later. Jadon Sancho raced in behind the defence and squared the ball for the Portuguese international to score from close range.

Ronaldo scores his 807th career goal

Spurs came out with more intent in the second half as Son Heung-Min fired wide. United were playing on the counter-attack and Ronaldo forced a save from Lloris after being played through by Sancho.

Spurs equalised for a second time in the game when Maguire deflected the ball into his own net while trying to block Sergio Reguilon’s cross on 72 minutes. But Ronaldo scored the winner in 81 minutes. The 37-year-old’s towering header from Telles’ corner kick went past Lloris into the back of the net.

Ronaldo has now scored a hat-trick at club level in each of the 13 calendar years. It was the 59th hat-trick of Ronaldo’s career and his first for the Old Trafford side since 2008 following his return. Meanwhile the legendary striker also etched his name in the record books as professional football’s all-time leading scorer with 807 goals to his name.
