Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi wants his players to quickly forget about the Coppa Italia semi-final win over AC Milan and turn focus on to the Serie A fixture against AS Roma on Saturday. With a victory at San Siro, the Nerazzurri can move to the summit of the standings, replacing AC Milan, who will travel to Lazio on Sunday. The defending champions are assured of retaining the Scudetto if they don’t drop any points in their remaining six fixtures.

The Nerazzurri are on an impressive run of form having won four consecutive games across all competitions, that includes victories over Juventus and Milan. The  mid-week Italian Cup last-four fixture saw Inter thrashing their city rivals 3-0. Lautaro Martinez scored a first half double before Robin Gosens’ late goal completed the drubbing to book a meeting with Juventus in the final next month.

“This week is so important. The victory against Milan has boosted our self-confidence, we’ll play another final and this is very important,” Inzaghi said at a press conference.

“We had never lost confidence, we had collected less than we deserved. A month is remaining and there are many games to face in a serene way.

“We know that we’ll face one of the best teams in the league, with an excellent coach who we all know. He is doing really well at Roma, and we’ll need great attention. It’s a crucial game for us.”

Joaquin Correa, who is slowly finding his feet at Inter after a couple of injuries, provided the assist for Martinez’ second goal on Wednesday. The Argentine started the match alongside his countryman and had an impactful game. When asked about whether he would start against Roma, Inzaghi said: “He played a great game, like his teammates.”

“As of today, everyone is available, except Vidal, who suffered an ankle injury in the derby. The starting midfielders have played a lot, but Vidal, Gagliardini and Vecino have been training really well and will be helpful. Hopefully, Vidal will return to action before what we expect.

“We must forget about the Derby because tomorrow we face an in-form team. We need to be determined and be aware that every team will create trouble for us before the end of the season.”

Inter had a tough patch in the months of February and March, registering just one league victory, but managed to turn things around at the start of April. It all started with a 1-0 win over Juventus and then secured wins over Verona and Spezia. Was the Juventus win a turning point in Inter’s campaign?

“It was an important game that came at an important moment for us. The lads are working well. We have raised the expectations, but this must give us the confidence to end the season in the best way.”
