The end of the domestic season in football means only one thing – time for transfer speculations. The upcoming transfer window is expected to be a busy one for several teams. While some clubs require limited signings to reach the level expected from them, the others like Manchester United or Newcastle United are in for a busy one. When it reaches this stage of the season, there are a few repeated names that are constantly thrown about in the transfer mill. One such player is Lazio’s Serbian midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who has been in excellent form this season, scoring 11 goals and assisting 12 in 46 appearances.

The 27-year-old midfielder has been forever linked with a move away from Serie A side Lazio. His name started appearing in the rumour section a few years ago. Milinkovic-Savic was expected to be the next big thing in the world of midfield and several big clubs were linked with a potential move for the midfielder. However, nothing concrete has emerged in that aspect. Numerous transfer windows have passed and Milinkovic-Savic, who joined the Italian side in 2015, still continues to stay with them. With several big European clubs needing a midfielder in this window, it is only fitting to see the Serbian’s name once again popping up in the rumour mill.

Who are all linked with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic?

The regular usual teams that are often linked with the Serbian have once again been rumoured to have shown an interest in him. Lately, Manchester United’s alleged interest in the midfielder has been doing the rounds. It is reported that he is one of the players for whom the Red Devils have shown interest. There is set to be a massive rebuild under new manager Erik ten Hag at United this summer.

Midfield is one of the areas where they need immediate attention. With Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and possibly Paul Pogba and also Jesse Lingard set to leave in the summer, they need a minimum of one or two midfielders in this transfer window. United were linked with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and most recently to Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. However, the latest reports indicate that Milinkovic-Savic has also attracted interest from the Red Devils.

However, getting his signature this summer might not be easy for ten Hag and co after it was reported that they could very well face stiff competition from Spanish champions Real Madrid and Frech giants Paris Saint-Germain. Besides, Premier League sides like Chelsea and Arsenal are also thrown in the mix. However, it is not clear how many of these clubs are genuinely interested in him.

Maurizio Sarri on Milinkovic-Savic’s transfer rumours

The recent announcement of Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri might offer some encouragement, as he stated that Milinkovic-Savic will possibly leave Italy if he departs the club this summer. “Speaking to the president, I have become convinced that if Milinkovic-Savic does leave, and that will not happen easily, he will not remain in Italy,” Sarri told Goal recently. This comes after Lazio president Claudio Lotito told Rai Sport last week, “Milinkovic is not for sale. I turned down a €140million (£120m) bid for him [years ago]. I’d ask Sergej what he wants to do only in case we receive an important proposal from a world-class top club.”
