Premier Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 due to muscle strain. The prolific top-order batter suffered a left forearm muscle injury during the clash against Gujarat Titans on May 6. “Suryakumar Yadav has sustained a muscle strain on the left forearm and has been ruled out for the season. He has been advised to rest, in consultation with the BCCI medical team,” Mumbai Indians said in an official statement.

“We would like to field first, no particular reason. We keep changing what we want to do as a team. The season has been up and down for us. Everyone games us a new opportunity, we need to put our right foot forward. We have one change, Surya is injured. Ramandeep comes in for him,” Rohit Sharma said at the toss during Mumbai Indians’ match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai.

IPL 2022: Suryakumar Yadav missed out on initial matches

Yadav had missed out on the initial matches in the lucrative tournament as he was recovering from a hairline fracture on his thumb that he picked up during the third T20I against the West Indies on February 22. The veteran had undergone his recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru before joining the Mumbai Indians camp after missing out on the initial games.

IPL 2022: Suryakumar Yadav was key for Mumbai Indians

Yadav was a vital cog in the Mumbai Indians set up as he notched up three half-centuries so far and is the second highest run-getter for the franchise. He was one of the biggest positives for the five-time champions who have otherwise had a poor outing in the IPL 2022. He scored 303 runs from eight matches at an average of 43.29.

Mumbai Indians have looked like a pale shadow of themselves in IPL 2022. The Rohit Sharma-led side created an unwanted record of eight consecutive losses on the trot before registering their first win in the lucrative tournament this season. But their slump in form makes perfect sense as the franchise is still looking to compile their best XI from the new look squad which was formed at the IPL mega auction.

Mumbai Indians have shown that they have an array of talents including the likes of Dewald Brevis, Tilak Verma, Jofra Archer, new joinee Tristan Stubbs and batting maverick Tim David in their line-up who can prove to be a handful in the upcoming season. Their middle-order which used to have Hardik Pandya in the line-up might have looked shaky with Kieron Pollard not holding the fort after his release but David has shown that he can be relied on with the bat.
