For many years, there was a feeling that Suryakumar Yadav was going to be just a domestic giant and not international material. Afterall, the Indian cricket team had stalwarts both in the batting and bowling departments. The problem for Suryakumar Yadav transcended both epochs of India’s transition. When Sachin Tendulkar was there, India’s core team was settled. After his retirement, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni came up and the core of batters and bowlers remained intact. It seemed that Suryakumar Yadav would have no place in the side.
Having made his debut in Domestic cricket in 2010, Suryakumar Yadav was one of the stalwarts in the Mumbai Ranji side. A mountain of runs and consistency were his hallmarks. But, the India cap looked a long way away. Even in IPL, his exploits were under-rated and often slipped away from the radar. All of that changed in IPL 2020. He was one of the top run-getters and his consistency, innovation led to a dramatic call-up to the Indian team.
In the course of one year in 2021, Suryakumar Yadav has indeed shown that he belongs in international cricket. His nickname, SKY, is a suggestion that his ambition is never thwarted. Impressive showings in the ODI and T20Is against England and Sri Lanka have ensured that India’s search for a solid middle-order player is not long. Mumbai Indians, against whom he has been playing for the last four years, have once again repaid the faith in him by retaining him for a price of Rs 8 crore.
Suryakumar Yadav made his international debut in the Twenty20 International series against England in February 2021. His ODI debut happened six months later during India’s tour of Sri Lanka in August 2021.
In his very first series against England, Suryakumar Yadav showed his class. In the second match of the series in February, Suryakumar Yadav blasted 57 off 31 balls with six fours and three sixes. His 28-ball fifty, studded with dazzling strokes made him an instant hit. Even in ODIs, he displayed his mettle by registering double-digit scores in all the games that he has played. His average of 54 in ODIs and a strike-rate of 155 in Twenty20 Internationals is a great start, but he has to do well in the coming years.
Suryakumar Yadav has played for Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders in his IPL career. He made his debut for Mumbai Indians in 2012 but played only one game. From 2014 to 2017, Suryakumar Yadav played for Kolkata Knight Riders and he was impressive on some occasions. In 2018, he was bought by Mumbai Indians and in 2019 as well as in 2020, he was their ace player. Mumbai Indians won both years and credit has to go to Suryakumar Yadav. He enjoyed his best year in 2020, when he smashed 480 runs at an average of 40 with a strike-rate of 145. His presence in the middle order has been simply magnificent for Mumbai Indians.
In his Ranji Trophy debut in 2010, Suryakumar Yadav impressed with a magnificent 73 against Delhi. In his first full season, Suryakumar hit a double century against Odisha and smashed a century in the very next game. Although he endured a lean patch in the 2011/12 season, he was one of the top three run-getters during the 2013/14 season for Mumbai. Overall, he has hit 5326 runs in First Class cricket at an average of 44 with 14 centuries.
