India opener Shubman Gill made a brilliant start to his Test career to make 10 appearances for the national team before a shin injury saw him out of international cricket. He has, since then, struggled to find a way back into the national team but played a prominent role in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gill scored 478 runs at a strike rate of 118 in the previous season of IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He was eventually selected in the core group of the new IPL franchise — Gujarat Titans — alongside captain Hardik Pandya and premier spinner Rashid Khan.

The opener will have his opportunity in the upcoming season of the lucrative tournament to reinforce himself with his batting abilities. He believes that the Gujarat Titans can at least target to qualify for the playoffs in their maiden IPL season.

“I’m excited to start afresh with a new team. As someone who was one of the three players selected by the Gujarat Titans before the auction, I have an added responsibility to do well for them, and I love taking responsibility. There are a lot of exciting players in our team,” Gill said in a media interaction.

“Our aim would be to make it to the playoffs at least. I haven’t been in touch with Hardik or Ashu Bhai (coach Ashish Nehra) much because I’ve been in quarantine, but as soon as we get out, we’ll have our plans ready, and I’ll have a lot more clarity on my role,” he added.

Shubman Gill wants to ‘assist’ Gujarat Titans in winning games

Gill averages 31.48 in the lucrative tournament. He will be tasked to give his franchise a head-start as an opener throughout the season. The Punjab batter has accepted the challenge with both hands and said his Rs.8 crore price tag doesn’t add extra pressure on him to perform.

“My goal is to constantly assist my team in winning games. It makes no difference what the price is. You don’t put out your best effort based on the price you’ve been paid.

“If someone loves and appreciates cricket, he or she will offer everything on the pitch, regardless of how much money has been given for him,” Gill added.

Gujarat Titans will begin their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium on March 28.
