Dilip Tirkey is a renowned figure in Indian hockey known for his formidable defense skills as a fullback and proficiency in penalty corner hitting. He earned the name “The Wall of Indian Hockey” and led the national team as its captain. Tirkey is the only Indian hockey player to have played in over 400 international matches, with a career total of 412 games. His leadership was instrumental in leading the Indian team to victory at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games against Pakistan, securing a gold medal.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Tirkey transitioned into a successful political career. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 as a representative of the Biju Janata Dal party. In his political tenure, Tirkey chaired the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) and was later elected as President of Hockey India in 2022. He debuted internationally in 1995 against England and proudly represented India in three Olympic Games, including being the team captain in Athens in 2004. He was the first tribal to lead the Indian hockey team post-independence. Tirkey ended his successful hockey career, with his retirement announcement in 2010, after which he focused on nurturing future talent through the Dilip Tirkey Sports Research Development Foundation.
In his political journey, Dilip Tirkey has been an active member of the Rajya Sabha, notably campaigning for a Bharat Ratna honor for hockey legend Dhyan Chand. He has served in various roles, including as Chairman of the Odisha Hockey Promotion Council, and in 2022, made history as the first former player to become President of Hockey India. His leadership and advocacy in both sports and politics have made him become a legendary figure in India.
Having received the Padma Shree in 2004, he went on to achieve the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2002. Tirkey was a part of the World All-Star team in 2006 and the only Indian to be selected for the World All-Star team in 2007. Owing to his contributions to hockey, the Hockey Stadium at the reputed National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela was named after Dilip Tirkey in 2009. He was rewarded with the Odisha Living Legend Award from Orissadiary.com in 2011. Besides this, the hockey stadium inside Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences got its name after Dilip Tirkey.
