Chennai set to host Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2023 as Hockey India expands reach

The Indian Men's Team previously won the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in 2011 and then in 2016, where they defeated Pakistan in the final.

The Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023 will be held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, according to a statement from Hockey India, which is working to introduce international hockey competitions to different locations throughout the country. The seventh iteration of the competition is slated to take place between August 3 and August 12, 2023, serving as a warm-up for the Asian Games 2022 to be held in September. Teams will fight for the gold medal and the opportunity to advance to the Paris Olympics in 2024. The most recent international hockey competition to be held in Chennai was the renowned Asia Cup in 2007, where the local team won by defeating Korea 7-2 in the final match of the tournament.

What the Chief Minister and Sports Minister of Tamil Nadu said

The Indian Men’s Team previously won the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in 2011 and then in 2016, where they defeated Pakistan in the final. Due to the final game in Muscat being impacted by rain in 2018, India and Pakistan shared the tournament title. The participating teams were warmly welcomed by Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Hon’ble Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development for Tamil Nadu, who also expressed his joy at the sport’s resurgence in the region. He thinks that by hosting the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai in 2023, the city will further motivate and inspire new players to pursue hockey as a career. Under the direction of Hon. Chief Minister Thiru MK Stalin, the Tamil Nadu government promises to provide the occasion its fullest support.

What the President of Hockey India had to say

The president of Hockey India, Padma Shri Dr. Dilip Tirkey, congratulated the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) and the honorable Minister Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin for having the opportunity to host the prestigious Hero Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai in 2023. He lauded Stalin’s excitement and love for hockey and recalled his pleasant interaction with the minister at the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar-Rourkela. Dr. Tirkey also conveyed his joy at seeing top Asian teams return to India for the competition and reminisced about his time spent playing in Chennai.

Shri Bhola Nath Singh, the Secretary General of Hockey India, backed the President’s comments when he revealed that authorities had visited the Chennai location and evaluated the ongoing preparations for the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023. Over the past ten years, Tamil Nadu has played home to several crucial Hockey India National Championships for various age divisions. With the help of all parties involved, the organization hopes to introduce international hockey competitions to more states around the nation.

Officials who were present during the Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2023 announcement in Chennai were Mr. I Paranthaman, MLA Egmore; Dr. Atulya Misra, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Government of Tamil Nadu; Shri J. Meghanatha Reddy, IAS, Chief Executive Officer/Member Secretary, SDAT & Ex-Officio Director, Youth Affairs Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu; and Shri Sekar J Manoharan, Treasurer of Hockey India and President of the Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu. These officials will coordinate with Hockey India to conduct the tournament.
