The Indian men’s hockey team will get their 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign underway against Ghana. Hockey in India has been on an upward facing curve every since the Tokyo Olympics last year. The team broke a four-decade-long dry spell to win the bronze medal in the competition and since then, things have looked up. Since the Games in Japan, India participated in the 2022 Asia Cup in Jakarta and the 2021 Asian Championship Trophy in Dhaka. The team secured third place on both occasions. It has been 12 years since the men’s team won a medal at the Commonwealth Games and under the leadership of Manpreet Singh, they will be hoping to break that unfavourable record.
Ranked 36th in the world, the Ghana men’s hockey team will make its debut at the Commonwealth Games this year. Their last major medal came in 2017 when they won the bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations. On paper, it seems like a simple victory for India but their opponents would be hoping to shock the world.
