West Ham United registered an impressive 6-2 victory over Perth Glory in a pre-season club friendly at Optus Stadium on Saturday. The Hammers have started the pre-season the same way they ended the previous campaign. David Moyes’ side could not have hoped for a better ending to last season after they ended their club’s long trophy drought by winning the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy.

Wing-back Emerson was one of the stars of the match on Saturday against Perth Glory, as he continued his good form of late. “It was a long trip to come here, but it’s always a pleasure to come here in Australia. It’s my second time here and it’s good. The game I thought was good for us. It was a good result, but not just about the result, but also our performance, we did well. It’s incredible to come here in Australia and see our fans in the stadium. It’s always nice and of course, after the final and winning the trophy, to play in front of them and we are happy with this,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s website.

It’s a good start for us: Emerson

He added: “When you win, there is always a good atmosphere inside the dressing room and inside the Club and our connection with the fans. We are in the pre-season and we have to work a lot, but it’s a good start for us. In the second half I got more to the front and Jarrod put a lovely ball in, an incredible ball, and it was a simple one to head!”

Emerson also put in a great performance during the Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina, which was lauded by the supporters. “I just want to say thank you to everyone, as I just wanted to put my best on the pitch as everyone does when they play in a final. We needed to win the final, so I played with this mentality and I’m happy with what I did and what the team did. Of course, we won, and when you see the trophy you forget everything, including your performance, because you are just proud of the team and of making history,” he explained.

‘Scoring six goals was nice’

Assistant manager of West Ham United, Billy McKinlay, is happy with how the pre-season friendlies are going till now for the club. “It was a good evening all round really. We got a great welcome, the support we got was terrific, as it has been since we’ve been here in Australia, so that was a good start to the game in terms of the support we had. I thought the performance was really good and in the first half it was a good game and they caused us some problems. We played some good football at times, scored some good goals, and overall it was a really good workout,” he stated.

“A couple of seasons ago we had a really good pre-season and scored shed loads of goals, if you remember that. We didn’t score too many goals in the last pre-season campaign, so starting with four and then six can only be a positive. Scoring six goals was nice, and the front players being amongst the goals is always important. Jarrod scored a couple of goals and Divin and Gianluca scored, so we’re really pleased.”
