West Bromwich Albion will be bidding to extend their unbeaten run to four games in the EFL Championship when they play host to Southampton at the Hawthorns on Friday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-0 win versus Cardiff City on Tuesday night, while the Saints suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat at Bristol City last time out. Courtesy of the loss, the visitors have dropped down to third spot in the English second tier standings, with 64 points to their name from 31 games, just two adrift of second-placed Leeds United, who have played a game more, and 12 clear of the Baggies, who are sitting at the fifth position.

After suffering back-to-back defeats over Norwich and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship and FA Cup respectively towards the end of last month, West Brom secured second tier wins over Birmingham and Cardiff either side of a 2-2 draw away to Ipswich Town. The Baggies pocketed all three points against the Bluebirds on Tuesday night thanks to Michael Johnston’s opener inside the first minute, and Andreas Weimann’s effort ten minutes from time . It was Carlos Corberan’s side’s 15th second tier victory of the season. Meanwhile, West Brom have now won six of their last seven games across all competitions at the Hawthorns.
Southampton, on the other hand, went into the fixture at Ashton Gate off the back of a 25 game unbeaten run in all competitions, including wins in each of their last five Championship outings. But the Saints suffered their fifth second tier defeat of the campaign on Tuesday courtesy of second-half efforts from Sam Bell, Robert Dickie and Harry Cornick, while Russel Martin’s men scored a consolation goal through Adam Armstrong’s 95th-minute penalty kick. Nevertheless, a victory on Friday will push the Saints into the automatic promotion spot (Top two), and Martin is aware of the fact that his players need to deliver a response if they want to avoid slipping further adrift.
