Celta Vigo, on the other hand, are sitting at the 13th position in the La Liga Santander, having collected 39 points from 31 games, eight points clear of the drop zone. Carlos Carvajal’s side have no relegation fears and their aim would be to secure a top half finish, which they haven’t achieved since 2016. The Sky Blues have won ten league-games this term and their recent success against Elche on Thursday evening came in a dramatic fashion, thanks to Joseph Aidoo’s lone goal in the 90th-minute. The result ended Celta Vigo’s four game winless streak and helped them close the gap on tenth-placed Girona to just two points.
Sunday’s fixture will be the 35th clash between Villarreal and Celta Vigo across all competitions. Both sides have been pretty much even-steven when it comes to the head-to-head with the Yellow Subamarine winning 13 matches, compared to 14 victories for the Sky Blues and eight meetings ended in draws.
