Villarreal will host Celta Vigo in a La Liga fixture at El Madrigal on Sunday. The reverse fixture between these two sides in January ended in a 1-1 draw after Celta Vigo attacker Jorgen Larsen canceled out Gerard Moreno’s opener. Meanwhile both sides are heading into the match on the back of victories in the mid-week, with hosts getting the better of Espanyol 4-1, while the Sky Blues secured a narrow 1-0 win over rock-bottom side Elche.

Villarreal secured all three points against Espanyol courtesy of Etienne Capoue’s brace and one goal each from Dani Parejo and Nicolas Jackson. The result ended their two-game losing streak and it was Yellow Submarine’s 15th league-win of the season. Having won four of their last six outings, Quique Setien’s side have moved to the fifth spot in the Spanish top flight standings, with 50 points to their name from 31 games, just eight points adrift of fourth-placed Real Sociedad, who have played a game more. As of now, Villarreal are in pole position to secure a Europa League qualification, but with seven games remaining, Yellow Submarine will be aiming to put pressure on La Real, who are far from comfortable in the final Champions League spot.
Celta Vigo, on the other hand, are sitting at the 13th position in the La Liga Santander, having collected 39 points from 31 games, eight points clear of the drop zone. Carlos Carvajal’s side have no relegation fears and their aim would be to secure a top half finish, which they haven’t achieved since 2016. The Sky Blues have won ten league-games this term and their recent success against Elche on Thursday evening came in a dramatic fashion, thanks to Joseph Aidoo’s lone goal in the 90th-minute. The result ended Celta Vigo’s four game winless streak and helped them close the gap on tenth-placed Girona to just two points.
Sunday’s fixture will be the 35th clash between Villarreal and Celta Vigo across all competitions. Both sides have been pretty much even-steven when it comes to the head-to-head with the Yellow Subamarine winning 13 matches, compared to 14 victories for the Sky Blues and eight meetings ended in draws.
