PSV Eindhoven will be looking to defend their KNVB Beker title when they take on Ajax in the showpiece event at De Kuip on Sunday. This will be the second meeting between these to big guns of Dutch football in the space of just seven days. PSV secured a dominant 3-0 win over the Jews in an Eredivisie fixture at Philips Stadion last weekend. Ajax are having a below league campaign by their high standards, as they are currently occupying third spot in the Dutch top flight standings, having collected 62 points from 30 games, just three points behind the Red and Whites, who are trailing the leaders Feyenoord by eight points.

Ajax, who had won the Eredivisie title last term, are currently sitting 12 points adrift of the summit. De Godenzonen also suffered an early exit from the Champions League earlier this season, losing four of their six group games before falling to Union Berlin in the Europa League knockout round playoffs. John Heitinga replaced Alfred Achreuder at the helm of the club in January, with the former Holland defender overseeing 12 wins across his 18 matches in charge. Meanwhile, their biggest positive this season has been the KNVB Cup semifinal win over Feyenoord courtesy of Dusan Tadic’s 14th-minute opener and Davy Klaasen’s winner six minutes into the second half. Ajax are heading into the match on the back of some good form, having recorded seven wins, two draws and one defeat from their last ten outings across all competitions. Their lone defeat in the period came against PSV in the Eredivisie.

PSV put three goals past Ajax without reply last Sunday courtesy of Luke de Jong’s brace and Xavi Simmons’ lone goal from the penalty spot. It was their fifth consecutive victory and the result extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games in all competitions, winning ten matches in the process. Meanwhile, Lightbulbs defeated Ajax in the final last time out to lift the KNV cup crown. Given that Feyenoord have all but secured the league-title, PSV will be eager to defend their KNVB Beker trophy, but de Joden will also be desperate to win a sliverware and brighten their disappointing campaign.
