West Ham United produced one of the biggest surprises of mid-week after overcoming Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 away from home. Spurs made a great start to the season and were at the top end of the Premier League table. However, in recent weeks, Tottenham have struggled to replicate that early good form and have suffered some bad results. The latest team to inflict more pain on Spurs is West Ham United.

Tottenham Hotspur dominated the possession but struggled to break through a well-drilled West Ham defence in that Premier League contest. In fact, the visitors came from behind to register the three points, something that has pleased their manager David Moyes. “It was a great win. For the first time this season we’ve been able to celebrate something with our supporters. For them to come away and to see us win was great. We were desperate to win [for them] and getting this win is huge for us,” Moyes, quoted on the club’s website, said after the match.

What Moyes did not like was the goal conceded by Tottenham from a set-piece. “For all the things Tottenham did, we conceded from a corner kick. In the main, we’ve been really good from defending from set-pieces. I was really disappointed with that aspect and with how we performed in the first half. We’re trying to improve and we’re trying to be better on the ball. We’ve got two or three players that are great on the ball like Bowen, Kudus and Paquetá. We didn’t do it so well in the first half,” he explained.

We were much brighter in the second half: David Moyes

He believed the team’s performance improved after half time. “We were much brighter in the second half. We were trying to make sure we got a goal back. We got a couple of lucky bounces. Jarrod got the first goal and Prowsey got the second, but we earned them. James was up to get on the second one. It’s off the post, no one reacts and he’s there to put it in again, and it was even better that it was in front of our own fans,” he stated.

Moyes was happy to see his side beat one of the big teams in the division, as he wants their supporters to be enjoying moments like these. “I think, overall, it was a big moment for our supporters. They want to see us challenging the big teams and we want to do that as well. At the moment, I have to say, Tottenham are as good as any team in the Premier League,” he explained.

He added: “We’ve not had the moments and we want to be that team. We want to have those moments and be winning. We want our supporters to be enjoying it. I think tonight was a big moment for us. Hopefully it gives our players a lot of confidence, and our supporters as well because we’ve got a really good team here. We’re getting up the league and we’re doing well in Europe, so let’s hope it continues.”
