Arsenal produced an emphatic performance to trounce a clueless Chelsea side 5-0 in one of the most one-sided Premier League contests. The game was somewhat even in the first half when Leandro Trossard’s early goal gave the home side a 1-0 advantage which they held till the break. However, the Blues were no match to the rampant Arsenal attack in the second period. A double each from Ben White and Kai Havertz wrapped up a comfortable win for the hosts.

It was a much-needed result for Arsenal in the Premier League title race. With not many games left in the season, every point counts at this stage. There is very little to separate Manchester City, Liverpool and the Gunners at the top of the table. With still some interesting games set to happen, more twists and turns can be expected in the final weeks of the campaign.

In the clash at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal had an interesting midfield starting line-up of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Thomas Partey. It is not something their supporters are used to seeing. Partey’s recent injury issues had prevented them from fielding a midfield of these three players. However, all three played on Wednesday night and produced a solid job. After the match, Mikel Arteta spoke about the importance of having most of their squad available.

Mikel Arteta on the midfield trio

“Yeah we have the squad available apart from Jurrien [Timber] hopefully he’s going to be very soon back with us, we have to utilise the players, the quality that we have. We thought it was a really good game for Thomas [Partey] to come back, he looks like he is in rhythm, he trained really well the last few days, the way that they set-up, the players that they have in and the way they attack especially, we believe it was the right call to make. He stepped up and had a great performance and was really important for the team,” Arteta, quoted on Arsenal.com, said in his post-match press conference.

Asked about what he likes about the midfield trio, the manager replied, “Everything, but as well when they play Declan, Kai, and Martin or play with Emile as well or Jorgi for sure, he has played some big games and we’ve won some big, big games with him as well, depends on the game and the state, the opponent as well, it’s great because everybody feels important as well, that’s something really, really important now.”

Shifting the attention to the match, Arteta expressed his delight with the team’s performance. “Yeah, a big performance, collectively and individually I thought we were really good against a really good team that was in great form, and they were going to ask us a lot of questions, and we responded really well. From the start of the game I think we were really determined, really flowing, playing with a lot of courage and making things happen. Yeah, really happy with the result, it’s a big day for our supporters as well so really happy with that,” he elaborated.
