Thailand and Kyrgyzstan will begin their AFC Asian Cup 2024 campaign on Tuesday as the two sides go head-to-head in a Group F fixture at Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium. Both nations are making their second successive appearance in this competition, reached the round of 16 stage in the previous edition in UAE five years ago. The War Elephants were beaten 2-1 by China in the knockout round in 2019, while the White Elephants lost out to UAE 3-2. Changsuek are heading into the match on the back of a 5-0 defeat against Japan in a friendly on New Year’s Day, while Stefan Trakovic’s side secured a 2-1 victory over Vietnam last week.

Thailand began their 2019 Asian Cup campaign with a surprise 4-1 defeat to India, but bounced back to take four points from their next two league fixtures against the likes of Bahrain (1-0) and United Arab Emirates (1-0), and thereby advanced to the last-16 stage as runners-up in Group A. The War Elephants gave a good account of themselves in their first knockout round tie in this competitions in nearly a century, taking the lead through Supachai chaided’s 31st-minute opener. But China came out all guns blazing in the second half and netted two goals to progress to the quarter-finals. Changsuek then went on to win back-to-back ASEAN Football Federation titles, while they are now in a position to advance to the third round of 2026 World Cup qualifying, sitting second after two matches. Meanwhile, Thailand’s recent form hasn’t been very great, recording just one wins from previous five outings, losing four games in the period.

Kyrgyzstan, on the other hand, made their AFC Asian Cup debut in 2019, advancing to the knockout round thanks to 3-1 win in their final group fixture. The White Falcons then twice came from behind, thanks to efforts from Mirian Murzayev and Tursunali Rustamov, to force their round of 16 tie against UAE into the extra time but eventually lost 3-2. Now, it will be up to Stefan Tarkovic to try to replicate the success of his predecessor, Aleksandr Krestinin, who was in charge until April 2023. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan got the better of Vietnam in their last outing almost a week ago courtesy of Koel Kojo’s opener on the half-hour mark, and Ayzar Akmatov’s winner 15 minutes from time.
