Switzerland and Cameroon will play each other for the first time in the Group G fixture of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the Al Janoub Stadium on Thursday. The Swiss earned a spot in the finals of the tournament courtesy of finishing on top of Group C, ahead of European champions Italy, in the UEFA qualifiers, while the African outfit got the better of Algeria in the third round playoffs. Meanwhile, the two nations were involved in warm-up friendlies last week, with the Red Crosses losing 2-0 to Ghana, while Cameroon played out a 1-1 draw against Panama. The Indomitable Lions are returning to the global stage after missing out on qualification four years ago. Switzerland, meanwhile, had reached the last-16 stage in Russia before losing 1-0 to Sweden.

Switzerland had an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign, remaining unbeaten with 18 points from a possible 24, two points ahead of second-placed Italy. Prior to the defeat to Ghana, the National Team recorded consecutive victories against the likes of Portugal, Spain and Czech Republic in the Nations League games. The three wins helped Murat Yakin’s side to secure third spot in League A Group 2 and retain their spot in the top tier of European football.
Cameroon, on the other hand, are winless in their last four outings, having lost two of those. Rigobert Song’s side qualified for the finals in dramatic fashion as they defeated a strong Algerian side on away goals after the two legged tie ended in a 2-2 draw. The Indomitable Lions have qualified for eight World Cup finals and their best performance came in 1990, when they reached the quarter-finals before losing 3-2 to England.
Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer is likely to be a key man for Switzerland as the 33-year-old is known to produce stunning performances in major tournaments. Arsenal-man Granit Xhaka, who has 109 international caps to his name, should partner Freuler in the engine room. Embolo could lead the line, with Shaqiri, Vargas and Sow in support. As for Cameroon, Bayern Munich’s Eric Maxim Choupu-Moting might partner Aboubakar up front, with Napoli-man Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa pulling the strings in the midfield.
Switzerland probable starting lineup: Sommer, Rodriguez, Akanji, Elvedi, Widmer, Xhaka, Freuler, Shaqiri, Sow, Vargas, Embolo
Cameroon probable starting lineup: Onana, Tolo, Castelletto, Nkoulou, Fai, Toko Ekambi, Hongla, Anguissa, Mbeumo, Aboubakar, Choupo-Moting
