Switzerland U-21 need to avoid defeat against Group D’s top team France on Wednesday night to advance to the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championship in Romania. Swiss are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Italy at the weekend, while Les Bleuets secured a narrow 1-0 win over Norway to keep one foot in the last eight stage. As of now, France are occupying top spot in the group, having collected maximum six points from two games, while Patrick Rahmen’s side are sitting at the third position, with three points to their name, level on points with second-placed Azzurrini, who will be up against an already eliminated Norway in the other match of the day at Cluj Arena.

Switzerland Started off their UEFA Euro Under-21 campaign with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Norway thanks to goals from Dan Ndoye and Kastriot Imeri. However, Rahmen’s men couldn’t complete a similar come back against Italy last time out, having found themselves three goals down after a torrid first-half before making the score 3-2 courtesy of second-half efforts from Kastriot Imeri and Zeki Amdouni. Since finishing runner-up in 2011, the Swiss have failed to even reach the European U-21 finals on several occasions, and they were eliminated in the group stage two years ago. Therefore, Switzerland would be desperate to return to knockout stage of the competition this time around.
France, on the other hand, began the tournament with a 2-1 win over Italy through Arnaud Kaliuendo opener and Bradley Barcola’s 62nd-minute winner. After that, Le Bleuets edged past Norway thanks to Michael Olise’s lone goal 12 minutes into the second-half. With six points taken from two fixtures, Sylvain Ripoll’s side just needs to avoid defeat against the Swiss on Wednesday to earn a spot in the first quarter-final in Cluj. France will be bidding to go deep in the competition this term, having suffered a quarter-final exit two years ago in Hungary and Slovenia, while they have not won this title since 1988.
