Stuttgart will host RB Leipzig in their 2022-23 Bundesliga opener at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Sunday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win at Dynamo in their DFB-Pokal first round fixture last Friday, while RB Leipzig suffered a 5-3 defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup final two days later. Stuttgart didn’t have a great league campaign last term, finishing 15th in the standings to avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth. Leipzig, on the other hand, had a brilliant 2021-22 Bundesliga season, securing a fourth spot finish to earn qualification to the Champions League.

Stuttgart had an impressive pre-season, winning all four of their friendlies this summer. And then, in their first competitive game of the season, against Dynamo, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side secured the win courtesy of Darko Churlinov’s lone strike. However, the Reds were forced to see off their final 25 minutes of the contest with 10 men after Waldemar Anton was sent off for a red card offence.
Leipzig, on the other hand, participated in just two friendlies this super, starting with a 3-1 win over Southampton on July 16, before suffering a 5-0 defeat to Liverpool five days later. And then, in their first competitive match of the new season against Bayern, the Red Bulls put up a good fight to score three times through Marcel Halstenberg, Christopher Nkunku and Dani Olmo. But goals from Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mane, Benjamin Pavard, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane helped the Bavarians secure their first trophy of the 2022-23 season.
Stuttgart striker Kalajdzic has recovered from an ankle injury and is likely to lead the line alongside Tomas.Vagnoman and Silas could occupy the flanks with Fuhrich, Endo and Silas forming the midfield-trio. As for Leipzig, forward Yussuf Poulsen is unavailable due to a thigh injury, therefore Nkunku is expected to be the target man up front with Olmo and Szoboszlai playing around him. Klostermann, Orban and Simakan could form the back-three with Henrichs and Raum occupying the flanks
Stuttgart probable starting lineup: Muller; Mavropanos, Ito, Anton; Vagnoman, Ahamada, Fuhrich, Endo, Silas; Tomas, Kalajdzic.
