After being thrashed 3-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final clash last Saturday, Sheffield united bounced back with a comprehensive league-win over West Brom in the mid-week. The Blades secured all three points at the Hawthorns, thanks to second half efforts from Sander Berge and Anel Ahmedhodzic. It was Sheffield United’s 26th Championship-win of the season. With two games remaining, Paul Heckingbottom’s side are ten points adrift of leaders Burnely, with nothing to play for, the Blades can now enjoy the run in. Meanwhile, the Blades’s home-record this term has been second only to league-winners Burnley, Heckingbottom’s side collecting 48 points from a possible 66 so far.
After recording five wins from six matches across March and April, Preston looked favourites to snatch a playoff spot. However, with just one point collected from their last three outings, North End have lost their momentum and their faith now depends of other team’s results also. After back-to-back defeats against Millwall and Swansea City, Ryan Lowe’s side earned a dramatic draw against Blackburn last Saturday courtesy of Dominic Hyam’s 94th-minute own goal. Meanwhile, ending the season with back-to-back wins still could get them over the line, but that is not going to be an easy task against two of the in from sides Sheffield united and Sunderland.
