Sunderland play host to Watford in an EFL Championship fixture at Stadium of Light on Saturday knowing that a victory will put the club on the bring of securing a playoff spot. The hosts are currently occupying sixth spot in the English second tier standings, having collected 65 points from 44 games, level on points with seventh-placed Millwall but separated by goal-difference. The Hornets, meanwhile, are sitting at the 13th position, with 59 points to their name. The Black Cats are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 win away to West Bromwich Albion last weekend, while the visitors suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at Hull City.

Sunderland came from behind to secure all three points against West Brom at the Hawthorns last time out. The Baggies took the lead through John Swift’s penalty kick on the the stroke of half-time, but a second-half brace from Dennis Cirkin helped the Rocker Men register their 17th league-win of the season. The result extended their unbeaten run to seven games in the Championship, while winning three matches in the period. Meanwhile, Sunderland twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Watford in the reverse fixture in December last year.

Watford, on the other hand, are out of the running for a playoff spot after losing four of their last six outings. The Hornets suffered their 15th second tier defeat of the season against the Tigers last Saturday courtesy of Ozan Tufan’s lone goal in the first-half. Current boss Chris Wilder, Watford’s third of the season, will not be at the helm for the 2023-24 season after collecting just eight points from his nine games in charge. Watford will be hoping to secure a top-half finish and start building for the nest season. Meanwhile, the Hornets are winless on the road since getting the better of Norwich at the start of 2023.
