Sassuolo will host Lecce in a Serie A fixture at the Stadio citta del Tricolore on Saturday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of defeats in their opening match of the new league season. Sassuolo were thrashed 3-0 by Juventus last Monday, while Lecce suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Inter Milan a day earlier. Sassuolo managed to finish 11th in the standings last term with 50 points from 38 games and would be aiming to challenge for a European spot this time around. Lecce, meanwhile, won the 2021-22 Serie B title to earn promotion to the top tier of Italian football.

Sassuolo were demolished by a clinical Juventus last Monday. New signing Angel Di Maria was the star performer for the Bianconeri as the Argentine opened the scoring in the 26th minute before setting up Dusan Vlahovic for his second of the night, seven minutes into the second half. Despite conceding three goals, it wasn’t really a one sided affair, as Sassuolo managed to create around 15 chances and registered 7 shots on target compared to just four by Juventus. The Black and Greens lacked quality in the striking department.

Lecce, on the other hand, displayed great fighting spirit in their first Serie A match in three years, against the mighty Inter Milan last Saturday. Romelu Lukaku had given an early lead to Inter, before the Paprikans equalised through Asaan Ceesay. Just when it looked like the points might be shared, Denzel Dumfries netted the winner in the fifth minute of injury time to hand the defeat to the Yellow and Reds. Marco Baroni’s young side have plenty of positives to take from their defeat to the Nerazzurri and should fancy their chances against a misfiring Sassuolo.
