Roma began their Women’s Champions League group stage campaign with a win over Slavia Prague, before they came from behind to get the better of St Polten on matchday two. And then, the Italian outfit earned a hard fought 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg, one of the best teams in Europe. Unfortunately for Roma, they couldn’t avoid defeat against Wolfsburg in the reverse fixture away from home, losing 4-2 last week. The scoreline was replicated at the weekend when Serie A leaders Roma were beaten by current Italian champions Juventus, despite the fact that Annamaria Serturini and Andressa Alves got on the scoresheet. After suffering back-to-back defeats, Roma will try to return to winning ways against St Polten, and a victory would guarantee them a place in the knockouts.
St Polten, on the other hand, started off with consecutive defeats against Wolfsburg (4-0) and St Polten (4-3), before claiming their first win of the group stage in their away meeting with Slavia Prague, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Maria Mikolajova. After that, the Austrian outfit had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture against Slavia Prague last week. St Polten needs to secure three points on Friday to set up a dramatic final round of matches, but they will be eliminated if they lose to Roma.
