Rio Ferdinand has slammed Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their humiliating 5-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Red Devils were thrashed by the Jurgen Klopp side as the Reds raced to a four goal lead before the break. Naby Keita opened the scoring for the visitors before Diogo Jota doubled the lead and then Mohamed Salah scored a first half brace. Five minute into the second half, Salah completed the drubbing as he netted his hat-trick.

Speaking with his brother Anton, Ferdinand reflected: “It was an embarrassment. I’ve been there, we got beat 6-1 at home by Man City. But we had an identity to fall back on in a couple of weeks. This is the problem for this team, they’re struggling to find an identity and who they are.”

“These are the questions, when you watch the game, you think “what are we?”

“Is the manager giving the players the right information? And if so, are the players not taking on the information?

United looks like a team just thrown together: Ferdinand

“That’s what the manager needs to get to the bottom of because at the moment it looks like a team just thrown together.”

Manchester United has dropped to seventh in the points table with 14 points from 9 games. Solskjaer’s side looks unsettled and looks out of shape every now and then. They lose their defensive solidity while pressing which was very much evident during the 4-2 loss to Leicester City last week. Leicester scored three late goals when the Red Devils pushed for goals.

He added: “They look like a team you watch and think “are they coached properly? are they taking in the information?”

“They’ll be embarrassed today. Their pride. They’re going to have to have big meetings, they’re going to have to talk. It’s very disappointing and not a nice place to be as a Man United fan. The best teams all had an identity and they all know who they are.”

After consecutive league losses Solskjaer’s future is in doubt, although he still has the support of the management, it is learnt that Antonio Conte has emerged as the frontrunner to take over at Old Trafford should Solskjaer receive the axe.

Manchester United will next travel to Tottenham on October 30 before visiting Atalanta for the Champions League group stage match on November 3.
