Another massive surprise has emerged from the ongoing transfer window. And this time it’s all about the return of the legend. Manchester United have reached an agreement with Italian giants Juventus to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo. The Premier League club will pay €15 million with €8 million in add-ons as the transfer fee to Juventus for the 36-year-old Portuguese star, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils have confirmed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will make a sensational return to Old Trafford after they agreed on a fee with Juventus, making the club fans go wild across the globe. The former Manchester United player is expected to sign a two-year deal subject to being granted a visa and passing a medical. He will be the third big name arrival for the club in this transfer window after Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.

“Manchester United is delighted to confirm that the club has reached agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to agreement of personal terms, visa and medical,” a club statement read. “Cristiano, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has so far won over 30 major trophies during his career, including five Uefa Champions League titles, four Fifa Club World Cups, seven league titles in England, Spain and Italy, and the European Championship for his native Portugal. In his first spell for Manchester United, he scored 118 goals in 292 games. Everyone at the club looks forward to welcoming Cristiano back to Manchester.”

Intense couple of days

With Ronaldo having less than 12 months left on his contract with Juventus, reports have been gathering steam for a while about his possible departure from Italy. Manchester City had seemed the most likely destination for the Portuguese skipper until Friday morning. After Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, held talks with Juventus officials in Turin recently, reports started to emerge on Friday that City were no longer interested.

Subsequently, Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Juventus was confirmed on Friday by the Italian club’s manager Max Allegri. “Yesterday, talking to Cristiano, he told me that he has no intention of staying at Juventus,” Allegri told a press conference. “For this reason he will not be called up for tomorrow’s game [against Empoli in Serie A].

“Things change, it’s a law of life. Juventus remains, which is the most important thing. Cristiano gave his contribution, he made himself available, now he leaves and life goes on. Cristiano is to be thanked for what he has done, also as an example amongst the youngsters, but as I said, we must go on.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Cristiano Ronaldo: ‘We’re here’

It was reported that Cristiano Ronaldo spent an hour and a half at Juventus’ training ground on Friday morning to empty his locker and bid goodbye to his teammates before boarding a private jet from Turin to Lisbon.

Ronaldo enjoyed a blistering spell at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009. He won multiple trophies including three Premier League titles and the Champions League under legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United’s present manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Friday added to the transfer speculation, saying Ronaldo “knows we’re here”. “I didn’t think Cristiano was going to leave Juventus. It has been speculation this morning and the last few days of course,” Solskjaer told reporters.

“We have always had good communication. I know Bruno [Fernandes] has been talking to him as well. He knows what we feel about him and if he was ever going to move away from Juventus he knows we are here.”

“I was fortunate enough to play with him, I coached him when I got my job (as reserve team manager at United). Such a tremendous human being so let’s see what happens with Cristiano. Everyone who has played with him I think has a soft spot for him.”
