Preston began their pre-season preparations on a positive note, thrashing Bamber Bridge (7-0) before defeating Magpies (3-0) in Spain. Back on English soil Ryan Lowe’s side then took on fourth tier side Barrow and suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat as David Worrall scored the lone goal of the match. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Invincibles lost out to the Tractor Boys despite the fact that 16-year-old Felipe Rodriguez Gentile got on the scoresheet. Having been involved in the playoff mix last season, the Lilywhites faltered in the final curve, losing four of their final five second tier games. Nevertheless, Lowe’s side will be looking to get back to winning ways and have three more friendlies lined up for this month, before beginning their 2023-24 Championship season away to Bristol City early in August.
Aberdeen, on the other hand, enjoyed a successful season last time around, securing a third place finish in the Scottish top flight standings for the first time in five years. Barry Robson took charge of the Dons in January following the departure of Jim Goodwin in January. The 44-year-old tactician helped the Reds finish the first phase with seven straight victories, and while they only managed one more win from their five games in the Championship phase, Aberdeen had still enough to seal a top-three spot and a qualify for the Europa League playoff round. On their return to action for the pre-season in July, Robson’s men demolished Turriff United 9-0, before defeating Fraserburgh at Bellslea Park last weekend, thanks to goals from Alfie Bridge and Ester Solker. After the game against Preston, the Dons will play Charlton at the end of this month, before beginning their new domestic campaign away to Livingston on August 5.
