Scottish giants Celtic commence a friendly double-header with Portuguese outfit Portimonense on Wednesday, when they face the Primeira Liga side at The Campus. Both sides are set to begin their preparations for the 2023-24 campaign. The Bhoys had a stunning 2022-23 season, winning the domestic treble under the stewardship of Angne Postecoglu, who has now left the club to take charge of Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur, and therefore Brendan Rodgers will be Celtic’s new boss. Meanwhile, Alvinegros managed to ensure survival by just eight points last season and would be hoping to begin their preparations for the new campaign on a positive note.

Celtic won the 2022-23 Scottish Premiership title courtesy of collecting 99 points from 38 games, six clear of second-placed Rangers. Moreover, the Bhoys defeated Inverness CT 3-1 in the Scottish Cup showdown on June 3 thanks to goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Liel Abada and Jota. After adding another trio of trophies, the Hoops bid farewell to Australian tactician Postecoglou, and have reappointed Rodgers as the manager. The Celts are heading into the match on the back of a victory over Fraserburgh in a charity match. The match was conducted to raise funds for the those affected by the life boat disaster, and the Hoops’ squad largely consisted of B-team players, who prevailed 5-3 on penalties after both sides failed to score in the regulation time. After the warm weather training camp in Portugal, Rodegers’ side will travel to Japan, where they will take on Yokohama F. Marinos and Gamba Osaka before facing La Liga side Athletic Bilbao at Celtic Park on August 1. The Bhoys will kickoff their 2023-24 Scottish top flight season at home to Ross County on August 5.

Portimonense, on the other hand, will face Porto in a friendly on Wednesday, before taking on Estrela Amadora in the first round of the Taca da Liga on June 23. After that, Alvinegros have couple of friendlies lined up against Sporting Lisbon and Farense, before starting their league campaign away to Gil Vicente on August 12. Since returning to the big time in 2017, Marafados have consistently managed to keep themselves above the relegation zone in the Primeira Liga, and the 2022-23 campaign was no different for Paulo Sergio’s side. With a total of 34 points from as many games, Portimonense finished with eight points clear of the drop zone.
