Trabzonspor will play host to Basel in the first leg of their Europa Conference League knockout round playoff tie at Medical Park Stadyumu on Thursday evening. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 2-1 Turkish Super Lig defeat to Galatasaray on February 5, while Basel got the better of Sion 3-1 in the Swiss top flight, on Sunday. Trabzonspor are currently occupying sixth spot in the Turkish top flight standings, having collected 38 points from 22 games. The visitors, meanwhile, are also occupying sixth position in the Swiss Super League table, with 25 points to their name from 12 matches.

Trabzonspor dropped down from the Europa League after finishing third in Group H, behind Ferencvaros and Monaco. Despite winning their last group match against group-winners Ferencvaros 1-0, the Turkish champions got eliminated from the second tier of European football, having pocketed nine points from six games, just a point behind second-placed Monaco, who went through to the Europa League playoffs. Black Sea Storm’s form of late has been pretty much hot n cold, having recorded five wins and four draws from their last nine league-games. The Turkish side lost to league-leaders Galatasaray in their last outing despite taking the lead through Maximiliano Gonzalez inside the opening minute. After that, the football matches in the country were indefinitely suspended because of the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.
Basel, on the other hand, defeated Sion in their last match, courtesy of goals from Andri Zeqiri, Zeki Amdouni and Hugo Nova. It was just their sixth top flight victory of the season. Meanwhile, the Swiss outfit secured second spot in Group H to qualify for the Conference League playoffs. Alexander Frei’s side finished with 11 points from six group-fixtures, level on points with group-winners Slovan Bratislava, but separated by goal-difference. Their last Conference League match against Pyunik ended in a 2-1 win in November.
Last game’s goal-scorer Maxi Gonzalez will lead the attack for Trabzonspor, with Bozok and Siopis occupying the flanks. As for Basel, on-loan Brighton striker Andi Zeqiri will spearhead the attack, with Fabian Frei, Andy Diuof and Dan Ndoye in support.
